about

Driven by a vision of evolutionary creation, the T1J engages the audience right from the rehearsals and places the circular and carried voices at the heart of its work. With its innovative and committed approach, the Théâtre d'Un Jour continues to offer timeless works, always rooted in the quest for meaning, humanity and shared beauty.

Founded in 1994 by Patrick Masset, Théâtre d'Un Jour (T1J) is a Belgian company that combines physical theatre, contemporary circus and music to explore the issues of living together. Through an interdisciplinary approach, its creations focus on cohesion, exchange and the meeting of the arts, proposing collective works in which each experience becomes a shared act.

In 2008, the company became the first contemporary circus under a big top in French-speaking Belgium, affirming its desire to explore unique, immersive formats in which the fusion of visual arts, music and drama creates unforgettable experiences. Its flagship creations include ‘L'Enfant qui’, inspired by the early years of sculptor Jephan de Villiers, ‘Alaska’, a poignant exploration of memory, and ‘Les Inouis’, a work inspired by the stories of migrants.

T1J began its research into rituals in 2018 with the creation of ‘Strach - a fear song’, winner of the Maeterlinck Critics‘ Prize, followed in 2022 by “RECLAIM”, a circular ritual imagined as a secular prayer for a better future, which won several awards, including the 2023 Maeterlinck Critics’ Prize.

In its ongoing quest for meaning, T1J is preparing a new creation in the form of a triptych for the 2026-2027 season, questioning transmission and heritage through the prism of an imaginary ritual. This work will question the ways in which we carry and pass on our legacies.

Patrick Masset was born to Belgian parents in Prince George (Canada) in 1966.
He moved to Switzerland in 1969, and then to Belgium at the age of five. A graduate in philosophy, he founded Le Théâtre d’Un Jour (T1J) in 1994.

Father of two daughters, Bérénice and Salomé, and grandfather to a young boy who is sometimes integrated into performances — as a symbol of the child, of hope, and of the future.

He never attended a formal art school, drawing inspiration instead from a conversation with Yoshi Oida during a remarkable workshop: “Rather than attend school for four years, seek a master for four years.”

Exploring what he calls “the third shore of the river” has been central to his artistic path, shaped by decisive encounters with figures such as Fanchon Daemers, Ilka Schönbein, Michel Sarunac (le Caresseur Public), Rémy Balagué (Cie Vent d’Autan), and the vital influence of works by Pina Bausch, Peter Brook, Peter Sellars, among others.

Patrick Masset’s work is marked by a constant questioning: why and how do we live?
He relentlessly explores the human within us by confronting technical practices — such as operatic singing (and vocal work in general), acrobatic lifts, and more — with simple, honest performance. His approach places the audience at the heart of a shared poetic experience, rather than offering a conventional spectacle.

With a degree in Applied Communication, specializing in Socio-Cultural Animation and Lifelong Education (now MaCCS), from IHECS in 2005, she began her career as a freelance worker for the Namur Francophone Film Festival — first as an intern, then as a documentation assistant, and eventually as head of accreditations, database, and ticketing.

She later contributed to the founding of the non-profit association World Citizens Music and the Orchestra ViVo! created by Garrett List in Liège, where she worked until 2009. That year, she joined the Maison de la Culture Famenne-Ardenne (MCFA) as a programming coordinator.

A member of the Performing Arts Commission since 2020 — participating in the drama and choreography panels — she is deeply passionate about the performing arts, from creation through to touring.

This passion naturally led her to join Le Théâtre d’un Jour, where she now works as the production and touring manager for the company’s performances.

Trained in cultural management and production, Bérénice worked for eight years as Production Manager at Le Théâtre d’Un Jour, where she focused on production and touring. She then contributed to the creation of the project “Arts Vivants en Espace Public” — a performing arts in public space initiative — developed with Aires Libres, La Chaufferie-Acte 1, and ULg-Segefa, for which she became the project coordinator.

That same year, she joined the team at Le Rideau de Bruxelles, where she was in charge of production and the development of the touring department.

In 2019, she helped launch “La Deuxième Scène” with Écarlate La Compagnie — a project focused on the representation of women in the performing arts sector in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

In 2024, she founded her own production company, ONProductions, and now collaborates with Le Théâtre d’un Jour, Thymios Fountas, Camille Freychet x Maïa Blondeau, among others.

She is also a trainer with La Chaufferie-Acte 1.

Originally trained as a circus artist, Manu spent around ten years touring as an acrobat. He is now a hand-to-hand acrobatics instructor at La Grainerie and Esacto Lido. His artistic journey naturally led him to technical stage work: he began as a stage manager, later specializing in video and lighting, and eventually designing his own video projection setups for the stage.

He quickly became a general stage manager (régisseur général) for various companies, contributing to all phases of creation — from concept to execution — including project coordination and tour management.

He has collaborated with: Théâtre d’un Jour, Blick Théâtre, Collectif Ko.com, Cie Demesten Titip, Écrire un Mouvement, Cie Lapsus, Théâtre du Centaure, Anomalie, Dodescaden, Vol Plané, Baro d’Evel, Cirque Rasposo, Sans Attaches, Vent d’Autan, AOC, Cirque Désaccordé, Mauvais Esprits, and many more.
